Organized by the Chamber of Commerce, the event will offer a variety of family-friendly activities which kick off at 8 a.m. with the Farmer’s Market.

Starting at 10 a.m., a variety of food vendors will be on hand offering fall favorites such as caramel apples and an assortment of pumpkin goodies.

Pumpkin artists of all ages are encouraged to enter the pumpkin decorating contest and entries will be on display next to the sidewalk on the courthouse lawn all day.

Participants can register their pumpkin works of art at the Chamber Information Tent starting at 10 a.m. where visitors can also get a ballot to vote for the prize winners, which will be announced at 4 p.m.

Love to dress up your pet? Bring your furry friend to the courthouse lawn at 11 a.m. for the ‘Great PUPkin Mutt Strut’ pet costume contest sponsored by the Mount Carroll Veterinary Clinic. All pets in costume are welcome but must remain leashed.

From noon to 4 p.m. the old burning grounds at the bottom of West Market Street becomes a target range for the Pumpkin Sling Shot competition where participants can test their strength and see how far they can shoot pumpkins of various sizes using the 3-person sling shot.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., kid-friendly Halloween stories will be featured at the Mount Carroll Public Library as they host a Halloween Story Hour for children ages 4-8.

The fun continues at 2 p.m. during the 3rd Annual Great Pumpkin Street Drags sponsored by Kunes Country Auto Group.

Cash prizes are awarded in five different competition brackets where real pumpkins, fashioned into racing machines, speed down Rapp Street next to City Hall.

Pumpkins are mounted on any kind of chassis or have wheels on independent axles and participants are encouraged to be creative because prizes are also awarded for Best Decoration and Most Innovative Design.

Sign-up for the Great Pumpkin races starts at 1 p.m. at the registration table in front of City Hall.

At 2:30 p.m. the Mount Carroll Bowling Center carries the “everything pumpkin” theme even further as they offer their version of pumpkin bowling on the street directly in front of the Bowling Center.

In between enjoying the many activities, visitors are encouraged to stroll around the downtown and check out the decorated lampposts and then stop at the Chamber Information Tent to vote for their favorite, with the winner announced after Oct 31.

All day the Mount Carroll Foundation Pumpkin Family will take up residence in the Chamber tent where for $1 or seven chances for $5 you can enter the contest to guess the total weight of the Pumpkin Family. The winner of the $100 grand prize will be announced at 4 p.m.

After enjoying dinner at one of Mount Carroll’s eateries, finish off the day at “A Night at the Cemetery” by taking the Mount Carroll Historic Cemetery Tour.

The wagon starts loading in the parking lot behind the Mount Carroll Pharmacy at 5:45 p.m. and a $5 ticket can be purchased at Riverview Antiques/Tina’s Ice Cream Shoppe.

This tour of Oak Hill Cemetery tells the stories of some of Mount Carroll’s most colorful characters and historic figures and will be narrated by local historian and Mayor of Mayfest, Wayne Brooks.

Looking for something scarier? Raven’s Grin Inn, the well-known year-round haunted house, is at its peak this time of year and offers the best in Halloween fun.

Have you ever wanted to experience the quiet, secluded, country life? Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House offers tranquil days, peaceful nights and nature’s serenity in abundance at 12143B Roberts Road in Savanna Illinois. Roberts’ Roost features private accommodations in a 900 plus square foot bungalow with two bedrooms, living room and dining room combination, one bathroom. It is the perfect place for a family to spend quality time together away from the hustle of everyday living.

Roberts’ Roost, owned by Connie “Roberts”  Zink, was built in 1974 by Connie’s uncle, Glen Roberts. After Glen’s death, it was purchased by Connie’s father, Herman Roberts, and then later passed on to Connie. The one-third acre parcel of land the house is built on, was once part of the Roberts family farm. The farm was originally purchased by Connie’s great great grandfather and grandmother in 1860. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the farm being purchased by Harman Augustus (Gust) Roberts on March 3rd, 1914. Gust and Eliza Brunner Roberts went on to raise 16 children on the 160 acre family homestead with it remaining in the Roberts family until 1974 when it was sold at auction after Gust’s death. The one third acre of serene countryside that contains Roberts’ Roost is the last remaining parcel of the homestead left in the Roberts family. Since Connie’s fathers death, in 2004, Connie and Dennis’ daughter and granddaughter have resided in the house.

Now, ten years later the house has been turned into a country garden guest house retreat. Renovations have been completed with the addition of a new furnace and central air conditioning unit. Updates to the house have been completed and old gardens refreshed and some new gardens established. Roberts’ Roost opened August 29th, 2014 for reservations.

Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House is conveniently located six minutes from downtown Savanna and six miles from historic Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Only three tenths of a mile off Route 52 and 64, Roberts’ Roost is the ideal location for your secluded country getaway. It is the perfect place for a family to spend quality time together away from the hustle of everyday living.

Located just minutes away from the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and Palisades State Park, it is the perfect place to spend the weekend with nature. Surrounded by flower beds and bird feeders, Roberts’ Roost is a birder’s delight. Hiking or biking the Great River Trail is also just minutes, away along with fishing and boating the Mississippi River. You can also spend the day visiting the quaint shops in historic Mt. Carroll or take a tour of Savanna’s Havencrest Castle. Historic Galena, Illinois is only forty-five minutes away, (35 miles), where you can spend the day enjoying the many shops and area attractions. Stop by one of the areas many wineries and return to Roberts’ Roost for a quiet romantic evening in the country. There is something of interest for everyone in Carroll County, make Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House your place to stay to enjoy it all.

Our expected open date for the golf course is July 15th, 2014. We have the original 9 holes of Sandburr Run Golf Course (formerly known as Lynwood Links). We offer competitive membership and green fees. Watch for details as we get closer to completing the new golf course.

Sandburr Run is located on the former Curley Farm. In 1976. the Curley’s decided to quit growing watermelons and start a restaurant. They remodeled the barn into a restaurant and turned their field into a golf course and subdivision. They successfully operated Buck’s Barn until 1984. Many people were interested in purchasing the thriving business and the Curley’s hand selected Jack Viviani to continue what they had started.

Mr. Viviani hails from the Quad Cities with much experience in the restaurant business. Within five years, he added banquet rooms to the restaurant, new kitchen, the back 9 on the golf course, and the Hotel where we sit today. He also had a beautiful classic car collection on display, along with a National Champion Miniature Horse stable. Mr. Viviani successfully owned and operated the locally famous resort until 2000.

This historical location possesses a wonderful past, full of great memories, laughter, and enjoyment. We at Sandburr Run & Resort are delighted to bring this place back to life and continue to make new memories, here, on the Curley farm!
