River Relaxation

Rollin’ on the River

The Mississippi River is one of the most iconic and definitive features of Northwest Illinois. No waterway in America has spawned quite so many tall tales and legends — wouldn’t you like to experience this natural wonder yourself? Spend a whole weekend (or week!) of relaxation on the big river. Check out this handy three-day itinerary and plan your river getaway today!

Day 1

Arrive Friday afternoon or evening at your lodging. Consider a stay at or near the Mississippi, such as Savanna, Mississippi River Lodge, The River House, and The Outback Inn.

DAY 2

Start the morning by fishing off the dock or riverbank near your lodging. After a (hopefully) successful morning fishing, grab a quick lunch in town and rent a kayak or canoe from Fin & Feather or Savanna and paddle the river, taking in gorgeous scenery and observing abundant wildlife. Additionally, Savanna includes drop-in packages that allow you to access the entry and exit points of a long paddle by bus.

After your paddling excursion, treat yourself to a delicious dinner, then head back to your lodging property and relax on a deck or by a fire as the sun sets over the river.

DAY 3

After a Sunday morning coffee, pack your backpack and bike down the Great River Trail to Thomson Causeway Recreation Area. Enjoy 64 acres overlooking a 3-mile Mississippi channel and wetlands. Then, head over to the Mississippi Palisades State Park and see more of the river — and more wildlife — from the park’s scenic overlooks. As the sun dips toward the horizon, pack up and head home to share the pics and memories you made at the Mighty Mississippi!
