A Historic Stay
Sure, camping and cabins are great, but who says you have to rough it to enjoy the outdoors? If sleeping in a bag under a star-filled sky isn’t quite your idea of relaxing, the hospitable bed & breakfasts around Carroll County can offer a comfortable, relaxing stay so you can get the rest you need before another fun-filled outdoor adventure. Check out our handy, three-day itinerary for a memorable Northwest Illinois excursion!

DAY 1
Arrive Friday afternoon and check in at any of several Carroll County bed & breakfasts. Enjoy dinner and relaxing hospitality in a historic home. Each bed & breakfast incorporates a bit of Carroll County’s frontier past into its respective atmosphere, plus the modern amenities you’d come to expect that ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
DAY 2
Start your Saturday morning with a tasty, home-cooked breakfast before heading out for a nature walk. Many local B&Bs have extensive grounds you’ll enjoy exploring, but Spring Lake in Thomson features an 8.7-mile trail around the lake that’s perfect for hiking or biking. Soak in the gorgeous Mississippi River views, enjoy a picnic lunch, or cast a line for your next fishing trophy!
Looking for another fishing hole? Spend some time at Frog Pond, immediately off IL-84 south of Savanna. Or head to Ayers Sand Prairie Nature Preserve to hike and birdwatch on a unique terrain teeming with wildlife.
Next, spend the afternoon exploring the 2,400 acres of Mississippi Palisades State Park [LINK TO: Mississippi Palisades State Park directory page] where wooded bluffs and overlooks provide gorgeous views of the river country. Take in a gorgeous river sunset before dinnertime at your B&B — or head out to one of our many fine restaurants or nightlife locations.
DAY 3
After packing up and checking out from your bed & breakfast, rise and shine with a hearty breakfast at Mt. Carroll Café, featuring delicious omelets, skillets, french toast, and biscuits and gravy! Fill up for the drive home and head back relaxed and with some great tales to tell!
