It is the perfect place for a family to spend quality time together away from the hustle of everyday living.

Roberts’ Roost, owned by Connie “Roberts”  Zink, was built in 1974 by Connie’s uncle, Glen Roberts. After Glen’s death, it was purchased by Connie’s father, Herman Roberts, and then later passed on to Connie. The one-third acre parcel of land the house is built on, was once part of the Roberts family farm. The farm was originally purchased by Connie’s great great grandfather and grandmother in 1860. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the farm being purchased by Harman Augustus (Gust) Roberts on March 3rd, 1914. Gust and Eliza Brunner Roberts went on to raise 16 children on the 160 acre family homestead with it remaining in the Roberts family until 1974 when it was sold at auction after Gust’s death. The one third acre of serene countryside that contains Roberts’ Roost is the last remaining parcel of the homestead left in the Roberts family. Since Connie’s fathers death, in 2004, Connie and Dennis’ daughter and granddaughter have resided in the house.

Now, ten years later the house has been turned into a country garden guest house retreat. Renovations have been completed with the addition of a new furnace and central air conditioning unit. Updates to the house have been completed and old gardens refreshed and some new gardens established. Roberts’ Roost opened August 29th, 2014 for reservations.

Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House is conveniently located six minutes from downtown Savanna and six miles from historic Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Only three tenths of a mile off Route 52 and 64, Roberts’ Roost is the ideal location for your secluded country getaway. It is the perfect place for a family to spend quality time together away from the hustle of everyday living.

Hiking or biking the Great River Trail is also just minutes, away along with fishing and boating the Mississippi River. You can also spend the day visiting the quaint shops in historic Mt. Carroll or take a tour of Savanna’s Havencrest Castle. Historic Galena, Illinois is only forty-five minutes away, (35 miles), where you can spend the day enjoying the many shops and area attractions. Sandburr Run is located on the former Curley Farm. In 1976. the Curley’s decided to quit growing watermelons and start a restaurant. They remodeled the barn into a restaurant and turned their field into a golf course and subdivision. They successfully operated Buck’s Barn until 1984. Many people were interested in purchasing the thriving business and the Curley’s hand selected Jack Viviani to continue what they had started.

Mr. Viviani hails from the Quad Cities with much experience in the restaurant business. Within five years, he added banquet rooms to the restaurant, new kitchen, the back 9 on the golf course, and the Hotel where we sit today. He also had a beautiful classic car collection on display, along with a National Champion Miniature Horse stable. Mr. Viviani successfully owned and operated the locally famous resort until 2000.

This historical location possesses a wonderful past, full of great memories, laughter, and enjoyment. We at Sandburr Run & Resort are delighted to bring this place back to life and continue to make new memories, here, on the Curley farm!

Argo Acres

Argo Acres
16295 Argo Fay Road
Thomson, Illinois 61285

Proprietors: Dennis & Diane Etnyre

We grow a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables that we sell at our farm stand in Argo Fay and at Lyons Farmers Market in Clinton, Iowa. April-June: Early in the season we have asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries plus early season greens and vegetables. These are usually sold by order. July-November: Our farm stand opens daily in July with the start of green beans, sweet corn, and tomato harvest; and remains open through November with pumpkins, squash, gourds, and Indian corn. We also have apples, red raspberries, melons, and other seasonal vegetables. The only times we close are Wednesdays at 3:00 PM while at the farmers market and Saturday mornings. We open Saturday at 1:00. Otherwise we remain open. Produce is picked fresh daily.

Our children were active in 4H, FFA, and showed produce at local fairs. For more than twenty years, we’ve grown what we sell and it’s fresh from the garden, not shipped in. Not only is it nutritious, but our produce has that great homegrown taste, which both local customers and visitors enjoy.

The greatest challenge of operating our business is growing a constant supply with multiple plantings and extending the growing season. Of course, each year the weather presents various unpredictable challenges. Nevertheless, Carroll County features a great rural atmosphere with many neat people. We enjoy what we do and like meeting with the people that stop.

Like many moms, photography became an interest after my first child was born. In 2011, I started Teresa Hammer Photography. God has given me this gift and has made my business what it is. I am blessed by the doors He has opened for me to pursue this love. I am thankful for the family and friends who have believed in me and encouraged me.

In the studio or at a location of your choice,  I love to see God’s vision for your family, in all stages of life. I love to capture the connections between parents and children, engaged couples, or the fresh new life a baby brings. I like to have fun at every photo session and get the standard posed shots as well.

My husband, Joe Jr, and I have lived in the Shannon and Lanark area for most of our lives. We love the history and beauty in Carroll County. There is a large sense of community. You know your neighbors and everyone helps out.

Henry’s Double K

map-buttonHenry’s Double K
834 South Jackson Street
Mount Carroll, Illinois 61053

Proprietors: James ‘Henry’ Meador and Kathy Meador

Henry’s Double K is a newer business to the area and started as a bar. We’re open 6 days a week! Since then. we have opened our upper level. We have a large room upstairs that features an additional bar and restrooms. We have live entertainment, almost every weekend, performing up there. Our upper level is also available to rent for parties, receptions, or any other events. We have hosted a large variety of things to date. We have a nice outdoor patio area. Great for getting some fresh air on those nice and sunny days. We also do live music on the patio during warmer months. Our latest venture is adding a restaurant. Food will soon be available! Lots of great things to come!

Henry’s Double K opened May 23, 2013. It’s something Henry had been thinking about for many years. When the building we are located in became available, it was the extra push he needed to get the ball rolling. This is Henry’s first venture into the bar/restaurant business. He has been farming in the Mount Carroll area most of his life. He also works in feed sales.

One thing that makes us stand out is our actual building. It was originally built as the Karyn Kupcinet Playhouse in the 1960s. It was donated to the Shimer College campus by Irv Kupcinet, in memory of his daughter Karyn. The building is amazing. It is very unique looking. All the history behind it makes it all the more interesting. I think we are also appealing to the public because we are residents of Mount Carroll ourselves. They all know us. I think our community is great at supporting their local businesses. We are family run and it creates a nice atmosphere.

We attract a large variety of customers, of all ages, and that is great! We feature live music on a regular basis. So we draw a lot of music fans. We try to get something for everyone. We do nights of acoustic music for a more relaxing atmosphere, lots of live rock. and country shows. We also feature DJs and karaoke. On a basic week night, its a little quieter. Many locals stop by after work or to unwind. It’s just a nice small town bar where people know you. In regards to out of town customers, currently we are drawing in the music lovers on weekends.

The greatest challenge of operating this business is the hours! So much more goes into it than it appears. On top of the basic bar operations, we have been fine tuning the building along the way. Right now, we are a bar and we have our entertainment and events upstairs, but we are soon approaching adding the restaurant part of our business. We keep busy! The time all this requires, on top of other jobs and family, really is the hardest part. It’s totally worth it though!

Henry grew up around the Milledgeville area and has lived in Mount Carroll for many years. Carroll County is a beautiful area. It’s just home to us. Couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. You got to love the people. In large cities, you don’t get to meet such great people or get the support that we do from our friends and neighbors.

In closing, we’d like to say thanks to everyone for a great first year! If you have not been by yet, then make sure to check us out. Entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights! Our restaurant will be coming soon and we are very excited to make it available to you! Stay tuned! Follow us on Facebook for updates and entertainment schedules!

Parrott Photography Studios
103 West State Street
Mount Carroll, Illinois 61053

Proprietor: Elizabeth Parrott

I offer photo shoots for weddings, maternity, engagements, seniors, children/newborn, families, and more. I also sell nature photographs. I’ve been selling my work for 3 years now and have been doing photography for 7 years. I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. So it just comes naturally to me and I couldn’t be happier doing anything else.

I love trying to be creative and I never want to stop learning. I don’t want people to come to me because I’m cheaper or because I’m “good at it”. I want them to come because they love my work!

I don’t just want to get a few shots in and call it good. Photography is an art to me and I believe it should be treated as such. when I take them, I want you to shine in the photos and want people to see who you really are when they view them.

I think anyone can be a potential customer, especially people interested in my nature photos. I am willing to do a photo shoot of just about anything, as long as it is family oriented. The greatest challenge of operating this businesses is that I still don’t have an official logo. I can’t decide on what I want to do for one.

I grew up around here and have lived in the area all my life. When I first got married, we lived in Freeport, but moved back. I love the rolling hills, the fields in the fall with all the bright colors, and I love looking at the old buildings and houses.

Grace-filled Designs

Shannon, Illinois 61078

Proprietor: Amanda Sue Kaney

Grace-filled Designs was created to bring God’s Word into people’s homes through beautiful hand-painted designs. I, Amanda Sue Kaney, started out on this journey after painting and designing many pieces of wall art for my own home and the homes of my family and friends. The Lord has blessed me with the desire to paint and craft, and I know the journey He has led me on with Grace-filled Designs is long from over. It’s such a blessing to work out of my home and create custom pieces for individuals. I will continue to lean on the Lord for guidance and inspiration as I create pieces, and my prayer is that people will be inspired, encouraged, and blessed through each of the pieces I’ve created.

grace-filled-designs-logoAbout a year ago, I started this business as a part-time job for extra income, but also to be a blessing to others and enjoy what I’m doing. Everything I create is hand-painted, not stenciled, and personalized for each individual. People, that desire to be filled with God’s grace and His goodness as they walk through life, are particularly interested in my work.

I grew up in German Valley. My husband and I relocated to Carroll County for his career. My husband, Aaron Kaney, is the Assistant States Attorney for Carroll County. What we love most about Carroll County is the small town atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone and there’s a sense of security that comes along with that. Your neighbors wave at you on the street and everyone is willing to lend a helping hand if you need it.

What I’ve learned most on my journey with Grace-filled Designs is that God has a great plan for your life. If you follow the desires He has placed in your heart, He will bless you for it. The Story of How Prairie Path Guest House and Sampler was Born
Way back in the early 1980’s our family had all grown and married. Our big Victorian home was now quiet. Buster and I had only ourselves to cook and bake for. I, in one of my former employments, was a baker and really missed that job. Additionally, I started taking quilting classes to fill up the extra hours, when I wasn’t working. The more classes I participated in, the bigger my supply of quilts grew. So what was I to do?

We decided to open a Bed and Breakfast. I love decorating. So we transformed the bedrooms into beautiful Victorian and Country Rooms. We served all homemade breakfast pastries, fresh fruit, main entries such as omelets, French toast, Swedish Pancakes along with bacon or sausage. Problem solved for that part, but it still didn’t solve the problem of too many quilted things in supply. So we built a small shop and opened Prairie Path Sampler.

When my husband retired he decided to do some woodworking and fashioned many trash to treasure items, primitive wood chairs, birdhouses, and much more. So he added those things to our shop inventory! Maybe this doesn’t sound like retirement, but we do enjoy it!

Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
Customers stay at our B&B because of the ambiance and homey like atmosphere of our Victorian Home. Also, they seem to love the breakfasts.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?
I believe our breakfasts are what is best known at our B&B. We serve a really full breakfast all homemade.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
People travel to our town, because it still has brick streets and is in a historic district. We’ve come along way in restoring these features to their original beauty!

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
I have received many compliments about the neatness, cleanliness, food, and hospitality. Probably the best compliment was from the University of Georgia. It featured our Raspberry Cream Cheese Coffeecake at their Sunset Breakfast, served to 8700 people, and awarded us a Plate honoring it. We are honored to have received that privilege for our favorite Coffee Cake.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?
The best kept secret is the fact that our area has retained its original hometown friendly atmosphere and old-timey buildings.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?
Our small town has several unique stores to visit. We are centrally located from Galena, Davenport, Clinton, Rockford, and Freeport. We’re very close to beautiful southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa. That attracts lots of people. There are several State Parks nearby and our three night special is great for just that type of thing. Another great attraction is Timber Lake Playhouse, Illinois’ oldest professional summer stock theatre.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?
Yes, if you don’t mind walking up and down hills. We are located just about 1 mile from downtown.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?
Our favorite restaurant is new. It’s just a coffee bistro with wonderful sandwiches and soups, all homemade, and has a craft area inside too. It is located in Market Street Commons and its name is Brick Street Cafe.

How many rooms does your inn have?
We basically have three rooms, but we usually rent just two. That ensures everyone has a private bath.

Do you accept pets?
We do not accept pets or children under 8 years of age. Sorry, we have too many delicate antiques in the rooms.
